Dr Bike & Hire Scheme Sessions

Welcome to the Smart Journeys Dr Bike and Cycle Hire Scheme page. Below is information about the Dr Bike repair sessions and one-month Cycle Try Before You Buy Hire Scheme that are available to residents of Alconbury and Eaton Socon for free.

We are currently operating monthly sessions at both sites to help support local residents to maintain their bikes or try out cycling.

Cycle Hire Scheme

We’ve selected some great bikes to meet a variety of needs that you can borrow for a whole month for free.

It’s super-easy to book. Just read the information below, choose a bike and any accessories you need and hit the ‘book now’ button. You’ll be asked to choose a date and time to collect the bike, and confirm T&Cs, and we will then send a confirmation email with details of the venue and what to bring.

If you need any help or advice before booking, feel free to get in touch and we’ll answer any queries you have.

Collecting your bike

When you sign up you’ll book a 30-minute handover slot where we will handover the bike and accessories and check ID and address. Our friendly team will show you how to use the bike and answer any questions. You’ll need to sign and agree to the cycle loan agreement.

The bikes come with locks, lights and panniers as well as a helmet if you require.

Returning your bike

At the end of the month hire, you’ll need to bring the bike back. This will be at the date of the following session on the third Sunday of the following month. We can provide impartial advice on purchasing a bike, whether that’s through ourselves or elsewhere.

What bikes are available for the Smart Journeys Loan Scheme?

City bike – Gazelle Esprit

We have some lovely  bikes for you to use for cycling to work. These have an upright, comfortable position and are really easy to use. They can easily tow a trailer or have a child’s seat attached if the children need dropping off before work.

Brompton Folding Bike

Choose a folding bike, if you regularly need to get to the station or put your bike in the car for a part of the journey. We use Brompton bikes which are world renowned for being the smallest and simplest to fold and considered the best in the market. The bikes also store easily indoors so perfect if you don’t have a garage or shed to store a bigger bike.

Electric Bike – eg Gazelle Orange C7 HMB+ or Batribike

We have a number of electric city bikes available which are particularly helpful to anybody with long commutes or disability requirements. We use excellent Gazelle and Batribike models which use powerful and smooth Bosch or Promovec motors, ensuring hills and distance are no barrier!

Bikes come with mudguards and pannier racks and have a comfortable upright riding position.

Cargo Bike – eg Babboe City

As specialists in cargo bikes we have selected our popular two-wheeled Babboe City bike for residents to trial. They have a lovely balance and are easy to ride, while having very good capacity. They can accommodate up to 2 children between 8 months and 6 years with room for bags or shopping. We have a range of seats and accessories to suit different ages. Contact us if you have any questions or specific requirements.

Tandem – Circe Helios

Our popular and versatile tandem is designed just outside Cambridge by the fantastic Circe Cycles and is perfect for transporting children on the school run, keeping them close and safe. Its 20″ wheels means it’s compact, super light and there’s enough range on the seat post for it to be suitable for 4 year olds and up. We’ve got special crank adaptors for small people. We can also fit a childseat on the rear rack if needed which can accommodate children up to 20kg. Contact us if you require a childseat with your booking.

Children’s Frog Bike

Frog Bike dealers we have a huge range of Frog children’s bikes available to try. These cater in height for 2 years up to 13. Frog bikes are lightweight with high quality parts, with Frog believing if a bike is fun and easy to ride children are more likely to take to riding. The lightweight also makes them easy to transport, particularly if you use them on the school run one way. They can pair particularly well with our cargo bike if you had one child riding and another in the cargo bike. The Frog bike can then go in the cargo bike for the return home.

What accessories are available?

All bookings include an optional adult helmet. Children’s helmets must be purchased separately at a discounted rate. Contact us if you require a children’s helmet.

All adult bikes come with the option of our tough, waterproof panniers. These remain on the bike at all times and you can simply put your own bag into them while riding. They are also easily removable if you would rather ride without them.

Child seat

If you need to drop off a small child on the way to work, then we can have your loan bike set up with a decent quality child seat – children really love being on the bike. Our seats have been safety tested and come with a kitemark.

This child bicycle seat is only suitable for carrying children with a maximum weight of 20 Kg (and children with recommended ages ranging from 9 months to 4 years of age – with the weight as the decisive variable).

We also have a range of seats available for the Babboe City cargo bike catering from 8 months.

Dr Bike Repair Sessions

Dr Bike 30 minute Free Servicing

Book a slot and bring your bike for one of our mechanics to check and repair at either Alconbury Weald or Eaton Socon.

We do a 30 minute Silver Service with 35-point safety check on your bike, fix common issues and make any recommendations for longer work or jobs requiring larger workshop tools. We may also recommend you book onto a future session and we will then bring any specialist tools or parts with us if we can.

All labour is free. If you bike requires any parts the mechanic will discuss recommendations and costs with you. We keep a range in stock and can bring more parts to future sessions. We accept payment by card on site.

During your slot you’re encouraged to stay and ask questions and pick up tips during the 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can leave the bike with us and collect at the end of your slot.

Please note,  when the session finishes any bikes not collected will be left at the Dr Bike location and we can take no responsibility for uncollected bikes.
